It is with great pride that we at Coláiste Lurgan consider our relationship, for some years now, with the charity organisation GOAL.

Since 2001 we have managed to collect over £150,000 for the charity.

This money was collected by the scoláirí in many ways, the proceeds from Siopa GOAL, from the sales of Cuimhní Gaeltachta (a CD of songs as Gaeilge), GOAL jersey day, and sponsored Kayaking amoung other events.

This money has been spent on GOAL projects in the Third World contries such as Bosnia Herzogovina, Kenya, India, Niger as well as rebuilding houses in Sri Lanka.

Zebina Suma, Bosnia-Herzogovina (2002).

This was part of the project undertaken by GOAL in 2002 in conjunction with and financed by Coláiste Lurgan students and staff.

Zebina Suma is a small town decimated by the four year war that took place in Bosnia-Herzegovina in the recent past. Serbian troops levelled the town on their way to Gorazde.

The objective of this project was to rebuild the community centre that was destroyed during the war.

2002

Today

The community centre is now built and is in use as a health clinic, a youth club and as public offices.

The students at Coláiste Lurgan raised £27,000 in order to comlete this project successfully.

TG4 broadcast a documentary ‘Beart i mBosnia’ in 2003, detailing the extent of the project and the work of Coláiste Lurgan.

Nairobi, Kenya (2003-2005)

Kenya is a developing country with greater than half of its population living in slums on less than 5% of its land.

It is thought that approximately 135,000 children are living homeless on the streets in the city of Nairobi alone.

GOAL's work includes educating these children on the dangers of AIDS.

The proceeds of Siopa GOAL and sales of Cuimhní Gaeltachta raised c€35,000 in 2003, 2004 agus 2005.  This money was spent on the children of one of Nairobi's largest slums, Mukuru.

There are five parts to this particular “Programme for Children and Youth in Difficult Circumstances”

  • Community Children Education Centre, a school facilitating 300 children in the Makuru slum.

  • Rescue Centre This centre concentrates on young children who are victims of neglect or sexual abuse.

  • Vocational Skills Training Centre: This is a training centre that caters for 170 young people at a time. Cooking, woodwork and hairdressing skills are taught here. The aim of this one year course is with the hope that its past pupils will eventually set up small businesses of their own.

  • HIV/AIDS Street Education Project: The purpose of this particular centre is to educate and advise young people on matters of ensuring that they themselves can avoid contracting HIV/AIDS. Drama and puppetry is used in this vein in order to appeal to young children unable to read or write. This practice has proven highly successful and has been copied in cities all over the world.

  • Mobile Medical Clinic: This clinic provides a medical service for many poor people in Nairobi.

Certainly the few euro from Coláiste Lurgan won’t change the harsh conditions of the 4,000,000 dwellers in the Nairobi slums, but without doubt that the same money will make a huge difference to the lives of the thousands fortunate enough to benefit from GOAL’s work in that city.

 Sri Lanka (2005).

This year Coláiste Lurgan raised £7,500 in aid to assist the rebuilding of houses in Sri Lanka following the devastation caused by the Tsunami which struck Southeast Asia in late December 2004.

Under the guidance of Caoimhín MacDomhnaill, who lives in Indrabhán, that this rebuilding work was undertaken.

For more information on this project or to make a donation you can call Caoimhín on 087 6796685.

The stages of this rebuilding project are shown in the pictures below.
