Information for parents

Coláiste Lurgan provides cúrsaí Gaeilge for young people who wish to improve their spoken Gaeilge.

Students who attend Coláiste Lurgan are expected to make every effort to use the Gaeilge they already have as a basis for conducting all their conversations for the duration of these courses. This is a very reasonable expectation on students attending a cúrsa Gaeilge.

The all-Gaeilge environment created during the course depends entirely on the participation and good will of the students attending.

Learning Gaeilge does not have to be the main reason that influences the decision of parents / students to attend a Gaeltacht course provided that they are willing to accept and abide by the main condition of registration that relates to language behaviour?

It is our experience from working with young people on cúrsaí Gaeilge that the majority are favourably disposed to the language and participate enthusiastically in course activities.  The future of Gaeilge depends to a large extent on young people, on their ability to speak the language and the importance they attach to its future viability.

Coláiste Lurgan offers students a learning environment where they can have a positive input the setting up and maintenance of an all-Gaeilge environment... Most of our students who attend our courses for the first time have little or no experience of speaking Gaeilge outside of a classroom.

Students are given an excellent opportunity during the three week course to practice and significantly increase their ability to speak Gaeilge.

Each student’s self-confidence improves according to the efforts he / she makes and their willingness to use the language increases accordingly. Parental support for the course objectives is essential. The pre course interview and meeting with parents is a very important part of the enrolment process.

Difficulties arise where due attention is not given to the advice offered to parents and students at this stage.

A major problem involving Gaeltacht courses is that some parents regard these courses as a facility to look after their children during the summer. It is vitally important that parents understand and accept that students attend the Gaeltacht to improve their spoken Gaeilge and that this is the only reason that such courses are provided.

These courses are without doubt of enormous benefit to the student and they will continue to benefit from learning Irish and the experience long after their return to school.

Nóta do iarrscolairí

Ta súil agam go mba spreagadh duit na trí seachtaine a chaith tú I gColáiste Lurgan agus go mbainfidh tú taitneamh agus fiúntas as foghlaim na Gaeilge sna blianta ata romhat ar scoil.

Is iontach go raibh spéis agat barr feabhais a chur ar do chumas sa teanga.

Dar ndóigh, is é an bealach is fearr le líofacht a bhaint amach sa nGaeilge ná í a labhairt chomh minic agus is féidir.

Tá sé fíor-thábhachtach don duine óg aithne agus eolas a chur ar a (h)oidhreacht féin agus a bheith in ann tarraingt as an stór teanga, an stór smaointe agus as an éagsúlacht chultúrtha atá againn sa tír seo.

I ndeireadh na dála, braitheann todhchaí na Gaeilge cuid mhaith ar dhaoine óga, ar a gcumas í a labhairt agus a dtuiscint ar a tabhacht I dtodhchaí na hÉireann.

Tá cuid mhór daoine óga ann ar mhaith leo a gcuid Gaeilge a úsáid i suíomhanna neamhfhoirmiúla agus a d’fháilteodh roimh deis a fháil Gaeilge a labhairt le daoine eile a bheadh an fonn céanna orthu.

Ta sé easca go leor nós cómhrá Gaeilge a chothú idir daoine a mba mhian leo a bheith pairteach ina leithéid.

Más spéis leatsa do chuid Gaeilge a úsáid níos minicí, bain triail as í a labhairt le chomhscolairí / do mhuintir nó le cairde a bheadh ar aon intinn leat.

Is cinnte go mbainfeá féin agus do chairde an-sult as.

Is é mana Choláiste Lurgan ná “Beatha teanga í a labhairt” nó i mbéarlagar an lae inniu “Use it or lose it"
